How We Shape a Brow, and Why We Ask First

That is why we shape rather than strip. Eyebrow waxing here starts with a look at what your face is actually doing, not with a template. We work out of a private studio on Westlake in South Lake Union, and a brow appointment takes about fifteen minutes.

Every brow appointment starts with a conversation, and it is a short one. What do you like about your brows right now? What do you want gone? Have you been growing something out?

That last question saves more brows than anything else we do. Someone who has spent four months growing out the tail of a brow does not want a technician who cleans up "stray hairs" on autopilot. It takes ten seconds to ask and four months to undo.

Then we map the shape to your face, because the inner edge, the arch and the tail all sit relative to your eye and your bone structure rather than to whatever shape is currently having a moment on Instagram. Thin, feathered, straight, high arch: every one of them works beautifully on the right face and looks unfortunate on the wrong one.

Once the shape is agreed the wax goes on, and we remove everything falling outside the line before tweezing the handful of hairs that wax cannot reach cleanly. Wax handles the volume and tweezers handle the finish, which is exactly why skipping the second half leaves some brows looking blunt.

Waxing, Threading or Tweezing: Our Honest Take

We will say the unpopular thing: for most people, most of the time, waxing is the better brow service, and threading is genuinely not the upgrade it usually gets sold as.

Threading is precise, and in skilled hands it is genuinely good. It is also slower, it tends to irritate the skin along the brow bone more than people expect, and it does nothing about the fine hair between the brows that makes the whole area look untidy. Waxing lifts that fine hair together with the coarse hair in a single pass, and that is the difference clients immediately notice in the mirror.

Tweezing alone is perfectly fine for maintenance between appointments, but it is a poor way to create a shape, because you are working one hair at a time with no view of the line you are actually cutting.

The exception matters, so here it is. If you are using a retinoid, an acid, or any prescription medication that thins the skin, do not wax your brows: tell us instead, and we will either use tweezers or reschedule you. Waxing over compromised skin removes skin rather than hair, and the resulting mark takes weeks to settle.

Growing Out Brows That Have Been Over-Plucked

This is the most common thing we get asked to fix, and it takes patience more than technique.

Brow hair grows on a shorter cycle than body hair, so progress becomes visible faster than most people anticipate. The catch is that follicles which have been plucked repeatedly for years sometimes stop producing altogether, and no amount of patience brings those particular ones back.

Our approach: leave the growing areas completely alone, and shape only where there is enough hair to make a real line. That usually means the brow looks slightly uneven for the first two appointments while the sparse section catches up. Clients who push us to "tidy it up" in month one are the same clients still growing it out in month six.

Brow tinting genuinely helps here, because semi permanent color picks up the fine, pale hairs that are already present but effectively invisible, so the brow reads considerably fuller weeks before it actually is.

Getting Ready, and What Happens After

Brows need less preparation than body waxing, but a few things still matter.

• Come in with clean skin. Heavy makeup around the brow has to come off first, which eats into your appointment.
• Do not tweeze for at least a week beforehand. We need hair to work with.
• Tell us about any retinoid, acid, or acne medication before we start, not after.
• Skip sun exposure and tanning on the day.

Afterwards, the skin around the brow can stay pink for an hour or two, occasionally longer if you are fair. Leave makeup off the area for the rest of the day, skip the sauna and the hot yoga class, and do not pick at it.

How often should you come back?

Brows grow faster than body hair, so most clients settle into a two to four week rhythm rather than the 3 to 5 weeks we recommend for a Brazilian. Come in slightly too early rather than slightly too late, because a brow carrying a week of growth is easy to shape, while a brow carrying six weeks of growth means starting the entire shape over.

Brow Waxing Questions We Get Asked

How much is an eyebrow wax in Seattle?

$25 for a 15 minute appointment. Adding lip and chin brings it to $60 as a combo, and a brow tint on its own is $30.

How long does eyebrow waxing last?

Two to four weeks for most people. Brow hair runs on a faster cycle than body hair, so brows come back sooner than a leg or Brazilian wax.

Can you fix brows that were waxed too thin somewhere else?

Usually, yes, but it takes more than one appointment. We shape only where there is enough hair to work with and leave the sparse areas alone until they catch up. Tinting helps the brow look fuller while it grows.

Does eyebrow waxing hurt?

Less than most people expect. It is a small area and the entire process is over in a couple of pulls, though the skin around the brow can stay pink for an hour afterwards.

Can I get my brows waxed if I use retinol?

Not safely. Retinoids, acids and several acne medications thin the skin considerably, and wax will lift skin along with the hair, so tell us what you are using and we will either tweeze instead or reschedule your appointment.
