What tinting actually does
Tinting is semi permanent color applied to the hair you already have. It darkens brows so the shape reads properly, and it darkens lashes so they frame your eyes without mascara. We do brow and lash tinting from a private single room studio on Westlake Avenue in South Lake Union, and most appointments take thirty minutes.
Tint is a semi permanent color applied directly to the hair. It does not add hair, it does not change the shape, and it does not sit on your skin like makeup. It colors what is already there.
That distinction matters because it sets your expectations correctly. If your brows are sparse, tint will make the existing hairs read darker and fuller, and it will pick up the fine baby hairs around the edge of the brow that you probably cannot see right now. Those fine hairs are the reason a tinted brow often looks fuller than the client expected.
Lashes work the same way. Blonde and light brown lash tips are effectively invisible, so tinting them makes your lashes look longer without anything being added.
Why does a tinted brow look sharper even though the shape did not change?
Because color defines an edge. A pale brow blurs into the skin around it, so the shape you paid for at your last wax never fully shows. Darken it and the outline appears.
The three options, and what each costs
The brow wax and tint is our most requested combination, and there is a practical reason for it. Shaping first and coloring second means the tint lands on the shape you are actually keeping. Do it the other way around and you spend part of the appointment removing hair you just paid to color.
If you only want shaping without color, our eyebrow wax is listed separately at $25 on the full service menu.
Brow tint, lash tint, or both?
Take brow tint if your brows are fair, if they have gone lighter with age, or if you fill them in with pencil or powder every morning. Tint replaces most of that routine. It will not replace all of it if you like a strongly drawn brow, but it removes the daily obligation.
Take lash tint if you wear mascara mainly for definition rather than volume. This is the one that surprises people. Lash tint will not give you length or thickness, so if mascara is doing heavy lifting for you, it is a supplement rather than a swap.
Seattle makes a specific case for lash tint.
Nine months of the year, this city puts water on your face between the car and the front door. Mascara and a wet commute have never gotten along. Tinted lashes do not run, do not smudge under your eyes on the bus, and do not need touching up when you arrive. Several of our clients started with a tint in November and never went back.
Take both if you are heading into a wedding, a holiday or anything that involves a camera, and book it a few days ahead rather than the morning of.
How long it lasts, and what fades it
Brow tint usually holds for around three to five weeks. Lash tint often runs a little longer, four to six weeks, because lashes get washed less aggressively than brows.
So why does nobody ever come in saying their tint suddenly vanished?
Because fading is gradual rather than sudden. The color does not drop off, it softens, which means there is no hard line where it obviously needs redoing.
What shortens it:
- Oil based cleansers and makeup removers, which are the biggest single factor
- Exfoliating acids used on or near the brow
- Swimming, especially in chlorinated pools
- Scrubbing your face dry with a towel rather than patting
- Sun exposure over time
Switching to a water based cleanser around your brow area is the one change that makes the most difference. Most clients get an extra week out of it.
Before your appointment
We primarily work with a soft wax infused with tea tree oil and aloe vera. It suits all skin types and is gentle on sensitive skin, which counts for a lot when the area being treated is directly above your eye. Hard wax is available on request.
Licensed technicians work in a private, single room studio, so nobody else is in the room.
We ask what you want before we start rather than after. Brow shape is personal, and the gap between what a client means by natural and what a technician means by natural is where most disappointing brow appointments happen. Ninety seconds of conversation closes it.
Come without eye makeup if you can. Clean brows and lashes take color more evenly, and if you arrive in mascara we will spend some of your appointment removing it.
If you have ever reacted to hair dye, tell us when you book. That conversation needs to happen before the appointment, not at the start of it.
Avoid retinol and exfoliating acids around the brow area for about five days beforehand. Both thin the surface layer of skin, which matters if you are having the brows waxed in the same visit.
Let brow hair grow for about two weeks if you are also having them shaped. There needs to be something to work with.
Bring a photo if you have one. Not to copy, but because it is far easier to point at what you like than to describe it.
Aftercare for the first 24 hours
- Keep the area dry for about 12 hours so the color sets properly
- Skip saunas, steam rooms, swimming and hot showers for the first day
- Avoid oil based cleansers and makeup removers, then and afterward
- Skip exfoliating acids on the brow area for a couple of days
- Use aloe vera gel or a cool compress if the skin feels warm after waxing
The color looks strongest immediately after your appointment and settles within about 48 hours. Do not judge it on the walk home. What you see on day two is what you have.
Our waxing aftercare guide covers the skin side in more detail, and the full price list is on our waxing and beauty services page.
We are at 1500 Westlake Ave N #104, Seattle, WA 98109, in South Lake Union. Parking is genuinely easy and bus routes stop within a short walk, which our clients mention in reviews often enough that we have stopped treating it as a minor detail.
Book online, or call (206) 383-3157 with a question first. Our about page covers the studio and the products, and if you are short on time, our express waxing appointments are built for a lunch break.
Tinting questions from Seattle clients
How much does brow and lash tinting cost in Seattle?
An eyebrow wax and tint is $60, an eyebrow and eyelash tint is $60, and an eyelash tint on its own is $30. All are 30 minute appointments.
How long does eyebrow tint last?
Around three to five weeks. Oil based cleansers and exfoliating acids fade it faster, so switching to a water based cleanser around the brow usually buys you an extra week.
How long does lash tint last?
Four to six weeks for most clients, a little longer than brow tint because lashes get washed less aggressively.
Does tinting hurt?
No. The tint itself is painless. If you are having your brows waxed in the same appointment, that part stings briefly, and it is over in seconds.
Will lash tint make my lashes look longer?
It makes them look longer because it colors the pale tips that are currently invisible. It does not add length or thickness, so if you rely on mascara for volume, treat tint as a supplement rather than a replacement.
Should I get my brows waxed or tinted first?
Waxed first, then tinted, in the same appointment. Shaping first means the color lands on the shape you are keeping.
